This was Latin America. People celebrate over a good cup of coffee or getting a walk in the big blind. It’s nothing after a bad beat to hear someone rattle off a machine gun clip of Spanish profanity, scream to the gods, or pound a table like it was a snake that won’t die.
But this yell was in earnest. There was something serious yet silly about the way the little man’s voice cut through the crowd and made us listen. He screamed, and not for the last time, “Chiquitita!”
Jyries Saba was born in Vina Del Mar, Chile, the home of the tournament we were covering that night. Before making his final table run on the Latin American Poker Tour, he’d been playing throughout Latin America and Chile for the past 40 years. Now, for the first time ever, his hometown casino was hosting a major poker tournament and he had no plans to exit early.
But, Saba needed his cards to hold. He wanted the board to run out with little ones. And so he screamed “Chiquitita!” with every ounce of hope a seventy-something Chilean man could muster.
His pleas were answered and Saba lived. He lived to scream his signature plea over and over again over the next two days. He lived to make it all the way to the final table and scream it one more time.
That first night went much too late. The tournament stretched past 2am, past 3am, and to a time that forced the tournament writing staff to sit alone in the room after everyone had left. Bleary-eyed and slaphappy, we each cradled a beer the boys from Bluff brought from the closing bar. Reinaldo, the PokerStars Spanish blogger on the LAPT tour, punched a few keys on his computer and brought up the ABBA song Chiquitita on his laptop. We smiled, then sang along, and then laughed a 5am laugh that could only have been inspired by a little Chilean man.
Several months and tournaments down the road, many people forgot Chiquitita’s real name. They knew him simply by the catchphrase that, by then, everyone–Humberto Brenes included–had started to use. But everybody remembered that.
Chiquitita was a little one himself–he didn’t even hint at six feet tall–but carried on the corners of his smile the weight of every bad beat Latin America had ever experienced. For every one of the people in South America who wished death on the man who cracked their aces, Chiquitita was there to prove that the hot-blooded Latin American sterotype was nowhere in him. He was happy. He was overjoyed to be playing the game. Winning cash was only a little bonus.
If we’re honest, we can admit we’re living in an uncomfortable time for poker etiquette. There is an undercurrent of disrespect that’s hard to avoid. Whether it’s poor sportsmanship or just bad behavior, whether it’s television light blindness or bad parenting, there’s something just ugly about the way a lot of people act.
In a different world, in a different time, hell, even in a different country, Jyries Saba would have been lumped in with that ugly screaming lot. He would’ve been just another screamer. Instead, his personality rose above even his own voice. We gave him a pass on the screaming because it was actually funny, it was real, and more than anything, it was happy. When he implored the poker gods for “little ones,” he did it with a smile, like it was a little inside joke.
And really, it was. If you heard a “chiquitita” scream at the World Series, you’d probably have no idea what the person was yelling about. It was our little joke on the fledgling LAPT. We hoped to be screaming it for years to come, because, there was something about it that embodied a lot of what is great about the game.
Jyries “Chiquitita” Saba understood that playing poker is a privilege. It can be taken away by a government, family responsibilities, or just going broke. Saba understood he was nearing the end of his life. The smile on his face alone let us know he understood that simply being alive to play the game is a privilege in itself.
As we watched a generation of new players–many of whom are beset with an ugly case of unearned entitlement–it was a joy to find an old man who could help us understand that we’re just damned lucky to be able to do what we do for a living–whether it’s playing poker, dealing cards, or writing about it on blogs like this. This game has given a lot to a lot of people. It gave Chiquitita happiness at the end of his life, and he appreciated it. That’s more than a lot of people can say.

With the exponential increase in popularity of poker, and especialy on Texas Holdem, comes a wave of new players who may not be noobs to poker itself, but definitely are beginners in comparison to experienced players. These beginning players have been influenced by what they have seen on television. While this is cool and all, from a practical standpoint it has some disastrous implications for the beginners wanting to learn how to play Texas Hold’em. (Total novices can start with Texas Holdem Rules.)
To be blunt, if you watch Tiger Woods hook a three iron around a dogleg, over a sand trap, and then stop it on a dime on the green, don’t try this at home, kids. That’s not to say that all poker shown on television is Tiger Woods-like. Far from it. Some of the TV play is hopelessly bad — if only because even the best players sometimes make terrible plays.
The thing newbies need to remember is that the poker hands we see on TV do not well represent what makes a great poker player. First and foremost, the truly great players in all game disciplines master the fundamentals. Ted Williams, Earl Anthony, Magic Johnson, Cheryl Miller, Joe Montana, Martina Navratilova… all these folks spent hours and hours on fundamentals even AFTER they were superstars. In fact, great players devote much of their time to improving at those fundamentals they aren’t particularly good at.
Like any other game, Texas Hold’em has fundamental/basics that aren’t very flashy or readily apparent, but must be mastered (and continually mastered) before excellence can be achieved.
Discipline. No skills matter if you don’t have the wherewithal to follow through. If you know you shouldn’t tilt, but tilt anyway, you suck at discipline. And, you suck as a poker player compared to the poker player you could be. You may still be better than average, but you are a shadow of what you should be. It is almost impossible to work too hard on your discipline.
Bets. The bet is the atom of poker. Chips are electrons and protons, but the bet is the building block of everything good and bad that takes place in poker — if you play for money, that is. If you play to satisfy ego urges, rather than to win money, then you have different priorities, and you’ve blundered onto the wrong website. All ring game poker concepts revolve around the bet. (Tournaments are different. Surviving and being the lone winner are tournament concepts that don’t transfer to ring games.) You are not trying to win pots. You are trying to get the best of it on bets. You are trying to wager money, make bets, with a mathematically favorable expectation. This involves having as a coincidental goal the winning of pots, but that is not the main goal, and certainly not the focus of our efforts. We simply want to get our money in with the best of it. Win or lose, good luck or bad luck, that really is not the point. Let the bad players fixate on the results. You should fixate on doing the right thing.
Having the discipline to do the right thing all the time (more or less) is the basic of the basics.
The blinds. Poker is a thinking person’s game. When bets are made without thinking, either by bad players or when “forced” via the game rules (as blinds or antes are), this is the fundamental money at stake in the contest. Thoughtful play must significantly focus on the bets that are made thoughtlessly! Attack the bad players, and attack the blinds. Thoughtful players have an edge over semi-thoughtful players, but thoughtful players have enormous edges over bets made without thought (again, either by thoughtless/bad players or by any player because they are forced by the rules to make the bet).
How to Play HoldemLimit versus No Limit. Most of the Holdem on television is No Limit Texas Hold’em tournament poker. This is about as different from Limit Texas Holdem ring game poker as two things of the same species can get. Many of the winning tactics used in No Limit tournaments are either useless or counterproductive in Limit Texas Hold’em ring games. Chainsaws may cut most things better, but butter knifes are more appropriate for some tasks. Just because you saw a skilled lumberjack cut down an oak tree with one doesn’t mean you should use a chainsaw to cut butter.
Starting hands. One of the most poorly considered basics of Texas Hold’em is the fixation novices have on starting hands, with a corresponding focus on starting hand charts and groups. Texas Hold’em is much more of a post-flop game than a pre-flop one, but novices and mediocre players fixate on following guidelines on starting hands. Without learning to understand why you are playing a certain hand, and how you intend to play it after a variety of different types of flops, you are fully missing the point of the game. Learn why and how to play hands, not the simplistic what to play. Learning how to play Texas Hold’em means learning to understand the reasons you are doing the “what” you are doing.
Fundamentals win ball games and poker games and games of every sort. Let the suckers try to buy lunch with their egos. You should focus on the basics of making thoughtful bets when you have the best of it, and then you can focus on buying lunch with your profits — profits courtesy of the bad players, the ego players, and the players who simply don’t work on the fundamentals enough.
There is no reason answer, or chart, or diagram you can refer that teaches you how to play Texas Holdem, if you want to win that is. But following the various links here will lead you through the web of related concepts you need to master.

The 2011 World Series of Poker is the 42nd annual World Series of Poker (WSOP). It will be held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada between May 31-July 19, 2011. There will be 59 bracelet events. The first being the WSOP National Circuit Championship and culminating in the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em Championship. The November Nine concept will return for a fourth year, with the Main Event finalists returning on November 5.
WSOP.com will stream 55 gold bracelet events live (on a five-minute delay) via the Internet with Jack Link’s Beef jerky serving as the coverage’s Presenting Sponsor. ESPN also announced that they would double the airtime given to the WSOP from prior years and for the first time would broadcast six consecutive days of the main event on a live, 30-minute delay with hole-cards, starting with day 3. This marks the first time that all events will be streamed live since ESPN3 is streaming the $25K Heads Up, $50K Poker Players Championship and the Main Event, which are the only events not streamed by WSOP.com.
As of 1 June 2011 (2011 -06-01) Full Tilt Poker had failed to uphold its promise to return U.S. Poker players’ funds by May 15, following the April 15 Black Friday 2011 nevents. As a result, Full Tilt Pro Phil Ivey announced that as long as Full Tilt players were denied access to their money, that he would forgo the 2011 World Series of Poker and would be suing Full Tilt. Full Tilt Pros Howard Lederer and Chris Ferguson similarly have not participated in the 2011 WSOP, but have not indicated the reasons why.
For the first time a World Series of Poker bracelet was awarded to the WSOP Circuit National Championship winner in the 100-qualifier event from May 27 – May 29.
